Costa Rica's sport fishing records speak for themselves. Hosting several domestic, as well as international fishing tournaments, Costa Rica's pacific waters have claimed numerous IGFA sportfishing records. In costa rica you'll find sailfish, black and blue marlin, tuna, dolphin, and wahoo are common, as are roosterfish and amberjacks. World class fishing boats and equipment ensure both a comfortable and rewarding day of fishing. Several different locations along Costa Rica's pacific coast serve as departure points for half-day, full-day, overnight, and multi-day fishing excursions, i.e. Golfito, Quepos, Papagayo, Flamingo Beach, Tamarindo, and Drake Bay. Prices vary depending on the time of year, number of passengers, operator, and length of your intended excursion.

The canals separating Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado are famous among the light tackle enthusiast. Local fishing operators utilize small, open, outboard powered boats to transport fishing guests to the most desirable locations. Several lodges are scattered along the canals, however, the larger ones are centered around Barra del Colorado.
Lake Arenal contains primarily two different types of fish, the Machaca and Rainbow Bass. The Machaca are flashy acrobatic fish which can reach 9 lbs. within the lake, and perhaps 15 lbs. in norther and coastal rivers. More prone to stike smaller and faster lures, ultra light an d light spinning gear spolled with 4-8 lb. monofilament line is the rule. Fly fisherman should be using 8-10 wt. rods and 9 ft. leaders and smaller (size 4-8) poppers and streamers. The Rainbow Bass, which ranges in size up to 16 pounds, spawns year round and is found throughout the fresh waters in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. Generally speaking, the same tackle used to catch large mouth bass will be adequate here, i.e. surface plugs spinner baits, and rattle traps. Monofilament of 12-20 lb. is recommended with a "shock tippet" of 25-40 lb. Fly fishermen are advised to use rods of 8-10 wt. with 9 ft. leaders and large poppers, medium sized streamers in bright or lighter colors.
Sport fishing packages often reflect only the fishing portion of your trip, however, your package can be arranged to include any necessary accommodation and transport. Regardless of the type of fishing you select, both the rich blue waters off the coasts of Costa Rica and/or the the more tranquil fishing spots on Lake Arenal will satisfy your highest expectations.
